A Reading Vocation

"I Must Read, Read, and Read. It is my Vocation." - Thomas Merton

This is where I chronicle my reading life.  I also blog about writing at Lacey's Late-night Editing.

I'm Still Reading -- and These are My Habits

It's been ages since I posted here due to life stuff (read: I got pregnant), but I'm hoping to make this book blog active-ish again in the new year. I am starting with this fun and low barrier-to-entry reading habits survey. :)

  1. Do you have a certain place in your home for reading? - I will read pretty much anywhere in the house, but I try to spend at least half an hour a day reading on the couch in my TV room in the basement so that my kitty who lives down there gets some good, uninterrupted cuddle time. I do all my magazine reading in the bathroom, because, you know, magazines can be recycled.
  2. Bookmark or random piece of paper? - Bookmark all the way. I get so many lovely bookmarks as gifts and from events -- I love to use them and using a random piece of paper feels like a waste!
  3. Can you  just stop reading or do you have to stop read after a chapter / certain number of pages? - When I do my daily reading, I set a timer so that I remember to stop and go to work. So I stop reading when the timer goes off -- if it happens to ding near the end of a chapter or a scene break I will read to the good stopping point, otherwise I'll just end where I am.
  4. Do you eat or drink while read? - Sometimes I'll read my Kindle while I have lunch or I'll enjoy a cup of tea while I read a paper book. If I go out to eat alone I will make it a "book date," which is lovely.
  5. Multitasking: music or TV while reading? - If someone else is watching TV or listening to music I can read through it, but if I'm by myself I don't play music or TV while I read. Coloring is my multi-task of choice when I'm watching TV. :)
  6. One book at a time or several at once? - I can be monogamous in my relationship, but please don't ask me to be monogamous with my books. I usually read four books at a time -- a paper book, a CD audiobook in my car, an MP3 audiobook for exercising and doing chores, and an ebook on my Kindle.
  7. Reading at home or everywhere? - Um, EVERYWHERE, obs. One of my requirements for purses is that they have to be big enough for me to fit my Kindle in.
  8. Reading out loud or silently in your head? - Silently, although I'll read out loud a lot more after Baby comes.
  9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages? - I never skip to the end, but sometimes if a book isn't grabbing me I skip ahead to see if it looks like it will improve. Also, if I'm reading a book with multiple storylines or perspectives, I will skip ahead to see when I next get to read the one I am most interested in. But I always read every page in the book -- sometimes I just peek into the future.
  10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new? - I try to keep my books in relatively good condition, but I don't care if they look read after they have been, you know, read. Also, the majority of the books I read I bought or received used, anyway, so someone else has usually done the dirty work of breaking the spine and the pressure is off for me.
  11. Do you write in your books? - No, because I usually want to keep the option open of swapping them and swapping sites frown upon annotations. I use post-its and page flags instead.
