A Reading Vocation

February's A Year in Reading Suggestions challenge was to read a book discovered through a blog:

In February, read a book recommended on a blog.

I've decided to read as many books fitting the theme as I can each month since it provides some structure to my chaotic "to-read" list. I got through five "blog books" in February.

• Unraveling: Hanging onto Faith at the End of a Christian Marriage by Elizabeth Klein Corcoran: Discovered through my friend Jenny's blog, I was hoping this was a memoir and it ended up being more of a self-help book. Still, it's a good and necessary book even if it wasn't for me.
• When She Woke by Hillary Jordan: Discovered through my friend Jenna's best books of 2011 blog post, this was an interesting, though somewhat flawed, take on The Scarlet Letter.
• The Right to Write by Julia Cameron: Ah, the book I've been posting all the quotes from! I loved this inspiring book, which also came my way via my friend Jenna, on a comment she left on my blog post about books that addressed Writing as a Spiritual Practice.
• Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void by Mary Roach: This one was already on my "to-read" list, and I don't remember how it originally got there. But I decided to bump it to the top after reading about it again on a Booklikes blog.
• If Grace is True by Philip Gulley and James Mulholland: Another book recommended in the comments on my blog, this time in response to my counting Love Wins by Rob Bell among the best books I read in 2011.

I'm listening to Divergent by Veronica Roth before I see the movie later this month. I'm also planning to read Like Me by Chely Wright, which is the companion memoir to the documentary, Wish Me Away. AND I'll be tackling the next behemoth in the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Storm of Swords by George RR Martin. Yeah, I know the Song of Ice and Fire books became a TV series, not a movie, but I think the principle is enough the same to qualify it for this month. Plus, my husband will be annoyed if I wait till I'm done with this challenge to be ready to move onto the next season on DVD. It takes me FOREVER to read these books, so I'm taking a two-pronged approach: I will be reading it AND listening to it in my car on CD. Hopefully that will let me get through it in one month so that I'm ready to take on April's challenge unencumbered!
